Your Guide To Buying a Kindle Screen Protector

By Yehudah Posnick

Amazon's Kindle device is a convenient e-reader, that lets you carry around an entire library of written material, in a gadget that is only 19 cm x 12 cm. Amazon did one better by making the Kindle Fire, and the Kindle Fire HD, which are tablet computers as well. But with all those capabilities, you want to have adequate protection for the device. You don't want the screen to get damaged--and even dirt or fingerprints can degrade its performance. Amazon also sold a form-fitted leather cover for their Kindle, Kindle Fire, and Kindle Fire HD, that protects the device and the screen, and can even be propped up and read without you having to hold the device.  But there are other makers of screen protectors, which you apply onto the screen like a sticker. Their dimensions are custom-made for each type of Kindle device. We've put together this guide to help you select the best Kindle screen protector that answers to your needs. It'll help you:

    • Choose the right type of Kindle screen protector,

    • See useful tips about that type of Kindle screen protector,

    • Read reviews of different brands of Kindle screen protector, and what customers are saying,

    • Select the right brand of Kindle screen protector, and

    • Compare prices and find the best deals.

We can categorize screen protectors by the type of finish that they have:

    • Glossy: A glossy screen protector has the advantage that it preserves the image quality, maintains the color contrast and brightness of the images. The disadvantages are that there is more glare, especially when outdoors. It is also less resistant to scratches, smudges and fingerprints. If you use your Kindle mostly for pictures and movies, then you should prefer a glossy screen protector.

    • Matte: A matte screen protector has the advantages that it is considered anti-glare and anti-reflection. It is also more resistant to scratches, smudges and fingerprints. It has the disadvantages that the image quality suffers slightly: there is less contrast, less brightness, and a grainier image. If you use your Kindle for reading, then you should go with a matte screen protector.

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:

    • Avoid contaminating the surface: Apply the screen protector in a dust-free environment. For best results when applying the screen protector, take off any wool sweater, and cover your hair if you suffer from dandruff. This will reduce the risk of getting lint or dandruff on the screen when adhering the screen detector.

    • Leaves no residue: If after a few months the screen protector starts to peel, you undoubtedly will want to apply a new one. Select those screen protectors that leave no sticky residue on the surface when you remove them.

    • Procedure--Apply the screen protector as follows:

      1. Most screen protectors, such as the Mr. Shield screen protector kit, has a microfiber cleaning cloth. You use this first to clean off the Kindle’s screen from any grease, dust or marks. The ArmorSuit MilitaryShield - Amazon Fire 7" Screen Protector is unique, in that it is a wet application: you apply a spray solution to the screen, as well as to your fingertips, and only then apply the screen protector.

      2. There is also a dust removal sticker, to get rid of any remaining dust particles.

      3. Align the screen protector to the edge of the display, peel it off, and attach it.

      4. Use the squeegee card to remove any air bubbles that might have developed between the screen protector and the Kindle screen.

    • Multiple layers: There are some screen protectors, such as the amFilm® Kindle Anti-Glare/Anti-Fingerprint (Matte) Premium Screen Protector, that is made up of several layers of plastic. This gives added protection against scratches.

    • Ensure you have the correct dimensions: Each type of screen protector is custom-made for a certain device. You shouldn’t have to cut the protector to the size of the Kindle or tablet.

ArmourSuit--was founded in 2010, as makers of protectors for cellphones, tablets, media players, cameras, watches, gaming devices and GPS. Their headquarters is in Rosemead, California. Their screen protector is made from the same film material that is used in protecting military-grade aircraft, helicopters and space shuttles. It protects your device from scratches, impacts and drops. The glass doesn't accumulate any fingerprints, and maintains the same original touch-screen sensitivity.

Mr. Shield-is a manufacturer of screen protectors for mobile phone and LCD peripheral products.Their screen protectors are made from Japanese PET material (= Polyethylene terephthalate--a recyclable polymer resin of the polyester family). Their products have a lifetime warranty against scratches, defects, accidents, and even faulty installation.

NuPro--are makers of standing cases and screen protectors for Kindle devices. Their products are for the Fire 7”, Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10. Their screen protector kit comes with a cleaning cloth and applicator card.

amFilm--is a brand of electronic accessories, made by the company TechMatte, Inc. Their amPen product line is a selection of stylus pens and the like, amCase offers protection for phones, laptops, and tablets, while amFilm is a screen protector for tablets, cell phones, and touch screen devices. Their screen protector is custom-made for the most popular brands of phones and mobile devices.
