Your Guide To Buying a Cassette Adapter

By Katie Pulverman

It can be challenging to keep up with modern technological advances and ensure compatibility between each of your gadgets. A cassette adapter will offer you an upgraded alternative to the radio, a CD, or a cassette tape—remember those? This device is useful for anyone with a car that lacks an input for a portable device. This simple product can connect your hooptie to anything with a headphone jack and allow you to pick your own tunes.

    • Typical cassette adapter: Using a single-sided writing tape head, this type of adapter connects the cassette to a headphone port where the signal is read by the tape deck and is translated to be amplified by the sound system.

    • Cassette-shaped MP3 player: These types of adapters can be used as a stand-alone MP3 player with headphones, or can be inserted as a cassette and controlled with a remote.

    • FM transmitters: An alternative to cassette adapters, this device gets power from an output socket and then transmits your music over an unused FM station. While FM transmitters are also convenient, cassette adapters are less prone to interference.

Based on customer reviews, here is some feedback about cassette adaptors.

    • Adjustments: Some of these devices require modification in order to function in your car. Customers have reported having initial problems with the cassettes ejecting from the cassette slot or not playing at full volume, but after simply opening the cassette itself and removing any clear plastic tape or plastic liner (found on new devices) the product will function with ease.

    • Sound Connection: If you own a car with a tape deck but without Bluetooth connectivity, a cassette adapter is the best method to connect your car to your music. FM transmitters can play with a lot of static interference, so if your car is equipped with a tape slot, this will give you the smoothest connection.

    • Cost: On average cassette adapters are roughly half the price of FM transmitters; they offer a more simplistic setup and a better connection as well.

When choosing a cassette adapter there are a few qualities to consider.

Cord length: Think about whether you want your backseat passengers to be able to control the music or if you want to keep the power in the front seats. However, a longer cord means that you won’t have many restrictions as to where you can rest your music player.

Auxiliary plug: If you will be playing music from your phone, look for a straight plug to accommodate any size of phone case without having to slip it off each time you want to play music from it. The alternative is an angle plug which may not fit with a phone wearing a protective case.

Compatibility: Confirm the compatibility of your cassette adapter and your portable music device. Most adapters claim to be compatible with all devices with a headphone jack, meaning they should work with iPhones and other Apple devices, Samsung devices, and other MP3 players.

Scosche: Founded in 1980, Scosche finds inspiration in the California lifestyle. The company produces innovative car audio installation hardware as well as portable electronics accessories.

Philips: Founded in the Netherlands in 1891, Philips is a household brand across the world. With their first product being a light bulb, Philips continues to produce useful technology found in homes, automobiles, and hospitals.

RCA: One of the best known brands in consumer electronics, RCA was derived from the Radio Corporation of America, and today provides technologically advanced digital products.

Monster: Monster began in a San Francisco garage and today is one of the leading companies for headphones speakers, HDMI cables, and power solutions.
