Your Guide To Buying a Dishwasher

By Nicole Blanckenberg

Previously seen as a luxury item, dishwashers are becoming more and more affordable and therefore more and more popular. As they take all the hassle out of washing dishes, a tedious task that few people enjoy, this is no surprise. But while their popularity grows, so too do the number of available options, and choosing a good quality model can be tricky. Because we understand that a dishwasher is an investment and will be with you for many years to come, we have put together this dishwasher shopping guide to help you make the right choice in no time at all.

There are four main types of dishwashers that differ in capacity (how many dishes they can hold), their footprint (how much space they occupy), and how they are installed. Here are the main types of dishwashers for you to compare and review:

Built-in Standard Dishwashers: These dishwashers are the largest of all the types and can fit up to 12 five-piece place settings. Normally about 24 inches wide, built-in dishwashers are a popular choice in bigger family homes. With a two-rack layout and a spacious interior, they can fit a big load.

Compact Dishwashers: Similar to standard dishwashers, compact dishwashers are a space-saving solution for smaller kitchens. Generally 18 inches wide, they are ideal in smaller spaces for users not wanting to compromise on capacity; they can typically hold 8 five-piece place settings.

Drawer Dishwashers: Drawer dishwashers are the most energy efficient washers and consist of a single drawer. Washing smaller loads, they require less water and energy and are suited for smaller families and smaller homes.

Portable/Countertop Dishwashers: Small enough to put on a counter or free-stand in the kitchen, these dishwashers plug directly into the kitchen faucet. Countertop models are ideal for homes with no built-in dishwasher space and are light and small enough to be stored away when not in use. Extremely portable units will include wheels to make it easy to move the washer around where it is needed.

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their cool new stuff:

    1. Set-Up: Buyers of dishwashers that were easy to set up and operate and that included user-friendly manuals are much more satisfied according to the reviews. Choosing a top rated brand with good reviews will ensure you the same satisfaction.
    2. Capacity: For a dishwasher to get good reviews, it needs to have adequate capacity to fit its owners needed. Whether reviewers bought portable or built-in, as long as it fits the amount of dishes they need to wash, their models are rated well. You can choose accordingly by considering available space and the amount of dishes you generally need washed.
    3. Cleaning Capabilities: Dishwashers are designed to make dishwashing much more convenient and that is why units that clean adequately and require the least amount of pre-cleaning are top rated. Those that clean poorly or require significant pre-cleaning are seen as a bad investment.
    4. Customer Service: A dishwasher can have all the bells and whistles, but without accompanying customer service, even the fanciest products are rated lower. Good customer after-sale service for any queries or product problems is a big concern for reviewers who will rate brands lower for not having this, despite their dishwasher’s cleaning capabilities.
    • Energy Star is a rating set by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) that alerts customers that a dishwater with their seal is an energy efficient product and is guaranteed to use at least 41% less energy than a unit without the rating.
    • Consider your expected usage to ensure you buy a unit that is adequate for your intended use. If you don’t use a lot of dishes and/or don’t have a lot of space, a portable or compact dishwasher may suit you better. For families that do a lot of cooking and will need capacity for pots and pans, built-in, standard dishwashers will be the most efficient choice.
    • Your dishwasher should include a basic wash and rinse cycle and dry setting. More advanced models will offer more advanced features such as bacteria eliminating washes, pre-wash steaming, and delayed start functions that allow you to set the wash cycle for a specific time. Choosing between them is dependant upon your budget.
    • Stainless steel dishwasher tubs hold heat longer and will dry your dishes quicker.
    • Controls are either placed on the front of a basic unit or on the top of a more advanced unit, and your choice between the two should be based on budget and style preference.
    • For buyers who are sensitive to noise, look for a higher end model boasting better insulation to achieve less or virtually no operation noise.
    • For families with high dishwashing needs, choose a unit with adjustable racks to give you more space flexibility. Some of these units even include a third rack, allowing you to stack more dishes.
