Your Guide To Buying a Dog Backpack

By #<Author:0x00007fcca6d8f048>

When you go outdoors, it's convenient to carry your gear on your back in a backpack. It's a good way of freeing up your hands. Well, they have a backpack for dogs as well—you can store away some dog essentials—food, toys, first aid supplies, or a travel bowl. Also, it's a great way of giving your dog some exercise. You can have the dog carry water bottles so s/he can burn off some calories. It can also function as a dog harness, with an attachment for a dog leash. There are a lot of different designs and features that a dog backpack can have. Here is a guide to some of the best dog backpacks on the market.

Long hike pack: This will allow you to put food and water bottles on the dog's back, as well as other hiking gear. (One customer even was able to load their tent on the dog's back!)

Short hike pack: This will have a minimum of features. It won't allow you to carry much—it's just enough so that the dog can get some exercise.

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:

    • Adjustable harness: People were pleased with dog backpacks that are adjustable in a number of places. But there is a limit to how much you can rely on adjusting the pack. You still have to make sure that you get the correct size.

    • Durable material: You will want a backpack from durable material. Light material will tear after a few uses, since the load moving back and forth will tend to strain the material. It is especially important that the backpack is reinforced at the spots where you can attach a leash.

    • Detachable saddlebags: It's useful if the saddle bags can detach. Some models have Velcro strips to attach and detach the saddlebags.

    • Special straps for short-hair dogs: Owners of short-haired dogs recommended putting something plush around the straps. Otherwise, the straps will rub the dog and cause abrasions.

    • Waterproof zippers: It is convenient to have waterproof zippers on the backpack, since it will help keep the contents dry.

    • Payload: Don't burden your dog with too much gear. You shouldn't load the backpack with more than 25-30% of the dog's weight. Also, give the dog time to get used to carrying a weight on its back. The load should be distributed more towards the dog's front, than to the middle or back. This will reduce the risk of strain and back injury.

    • Appropriate Fit: Be sure to match the dog's pack to its size and frame. There are three main measurements:

    1. Girth: Measure the rib cage size by the dog's circumference as its widest point (right behind the forelegs). This is the most important measurement, and determines what capacity bag the dog can wear. For example, if the rib cage is from 13”-17”, the dog can carry a 2liter capacity backpack; if its rib cage is between 32”-42”, you can allow the largest backpack, at 16 liter capacity.

    2. Length: Measure the dog's length from its shoulder blades to the base of its tail.

    3. Width of the neck: Measure the circumference of the dog's neck at its widest part.

    • Reflective trim: It's convenient to have reflective trim on the backpack, so that it'll be easier to find the dog in low light conditions.

    • Ergonomic support: Some backpacks are made with padding to conform to the dog's spine, and for extra support.

    • Leash attachment: Some backpacks allow you to attach a leash. This method is superior to just a collar, since with a collar there is a risk of pulling too hard and hurting the dog. You can also use it to help the dog get over obstacles.
