Your Guide To Buying a Folding Table

By Yehudah Posnick

Besides permanent furniture such as a table for your kitchen or dining room, you’ll find that there are a number of folding tables that are convenient when traveling. You can also find tables that can easily be moved from one room to another. There are TV table trays, which are great for serving snacks while watching TV (a great American tradition). There are also card tables, which can be used for much more than just playing bridge or poker. There are banquet tables, if you want to set up a buffet-style event. And there are also folding picnic tables, which are convenient in your backyard, or when going camping.

We've put together this guide to help you select the folding table that answers to your needs. It'll help you:

    • Choose the right type of folding table,

    • See useful tips about that type of folding table,

    • Read reviews of different brands of folding table, and what customers are saying,

    • Select the right brand of folding table, and

    • Compare prices and find the best deals.

    • TV Table Tray: This will also be called a personal table. It typically is to be used by one person at a time, for eating while watching TV--but it can be used for working on a small project as well.  Lifetime makes personal tables in two dimensions: 26” x 18”, and a slightly larger model at 30” x 20”.

    • Card table--This will be a square table, where each leg folds up separately. It’s convenient for setting up a card game, such as bridge, where you have four participants, one on each side of the table.

    • General use table: This can either be rectangular, square, or round, for home and office use.

    • Banquet table: This is ideal for setting up a buffet--the table itself has a spacious table top, but collapses down for easy transport. This can use a drop-down leaf design, where there is a leaf at each end of the table that is folded outward.

    • Folding picnic table: A picnic table includes benches on opposite sides of the table. Some folding picnic tables will collapse into a park bench, with the tabletop serving as the back support. The Work Smart Resin 3-Piece Folding Bench and Table Set will fold up into a flat, stackable surfaces, that is also surprisingly portable.

    • Latch to close the table: When transporting the table, it’s important the the table has a latch, to ensure that the table remains closed. For example, the Office Star Work Smart Resin 3-Piece Folding Bench and Table Set is a picnic bench that latches shut.

    • Extra table space: For people who can’t fit all of the dishes at once on their dining room table, the Cosco 20” x 48” ABS Top-Folding Table can provide that extra space needed. At 20” wide, it still allows for adequate access to all the food on the table.

    • Dimensions: Take the dimensions of your table into account, so that you’ll know how much space to allow for it, as well as the portability of the table when traveling. Lifetime makes 4-foot, 5-foot, 6-foot and 8-foot long folding tables. Besides the legs folding in, the sides of the table fold as well. The Lifetime 80273 Fold in Half Square Table is 34” x 34”, but then folds up to half the size, a comfortable 17” x 34”.

    • Adjustable height: Some folding tables allow you to adjust the height. The legs telescope out, to allow you to raise the height of the table top.

    • Material: If you have TV trays made from wood, and the wood is not treated to be waterproof, you might want to supply a coat or urethane on top of the wood. This will protect the wood from spills of liquid, which will ruin the wood’s finish.

    • Textured table top to reduce scratches: The Best Choice Products Folding Plastic Table has a textured surface, to prevent the surface from getting scratched. That’s an important feature, to prolong the life of the product. It also won’t get damaged from being exposed to water.

    • Load capacity: The load is how much weight the table can safely support. You clearly don’t want to exceed that limit--not for the table, nor for the benches. For example, the Office Star Work Smart Resin 3-Piece Folding Bench and Table Set can support up to 300 pounds.
