People expect a lot more from their refrigerators nowadays than just to keep their food from spoiling. There are refrigerators that also make ice cubes, prepare hot water, brew coffee, or have a feature for providing cold, filtered water. General Electric (GE) has at least 40 models of refrigerators that take the MWF model water filter. They filter the water that either goes to the icemaker, or the drinking water that comes out from the front of the fridge. But there are other companies that make compatible water filters, that cost less. Is it worth it to spend more money on the original GE MWF filter? Or should you try to save money and buy a compatible filter? Here is a guide to the MWF filters available on the market.
GE original: The original GE MWF filter is around $49.99. It runs the water through activated charcoal.
Compatible filters: The compatible filters can range from $39.00 for individual units, or as little as $51 for a package of 6 filters! (That will be enough filters for the next three years.)
Adapter: If you have an older model of GE refrigerator, it might need an adapter (that costs around $6) in order to insert the MWF filter.
Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:
Taste difference: Some people who bought a Tier1 filter said that the water coming out of the fridge's filter didn't taste much different than tap water! Others said that they couldn't detect any difference between the Tier1 filtered water and GE filtered water.
Installation: Some people noticed that the compatible filter didn't install as easily as the original GE model. It took a few tries and some patience to get the filter in properly.
When to replace the filter: GE suggests replacing their filter once every 6 months. When the rate at which the water goes out of the filter decreases, it's also probably an indication that the filter should be changed. (Some noticed that when the ice cubes coming out of the ice cube maker become noticeably smaller, it's probably because the filter is clogged with contaminants. That's also a sign to change the filter.)
Measuring water quality: Some suggest using a TDS (=total dissolved solids) meter to measure the water quality coming out of the fridge's filter. If the ratio of the TDS reading of the filtered water compared to the TDS reading of tap water is more than 0.20, that means that the filter should be replaced.
Write the date that you changed the filter on the new filter: It's suggested to write the date that you replaced the filter on the new filter. It'll remind you when to replace it.
Run water out of the filter after replacing it: They recommend running water through the new filter for 3 minutes when replacing it. This is because manufacture and shipping the filter may loosen some of the carbon granules in the filter. You don't want them in your drinking water—they give the water a bitter taste, and a cloudy appearance. So run 3-5 gallons of water through the filter, before drinking any of the water (you can use the wastewater for your houseplants or lawn).
