Your Guide To Buying an Ovulation Test

By #<Author:0x00007fc091422080>

One of the earliest pregnancy tests on record was from ancient Egypt. A woman was asked to urinate on wheat and barley seeds. If the wheat would sprout, it was considered an indication that she would give birth to a girl; if the barley would sprout, it would be a sign that she’ll have a boy. (The test was performed in modern times, and was seen to be 70% accurate!) The increased estrogen levels in a pregnant woman’s urine is the agent helping the seeds grow.

Detection methods have progressed together with our medical knowledge: Nowadays there are ovulation tests and pregnancy tests that are over 98% accurate. There are ovulation tests that work on measuring hormone levels in urine, saliva, or in cervical discharge. We've put together this guide to help you select the best ovulation test that answers to your needs. It'll help you:

    • Choose the right type of ovulation test,

    • See useful tips about that type of ovulation test,

    • Read reviews of different brands of ovulation tests, and what customers are saying,

    • Select the right brand of ovulation test, and

    • Compare prices and find the best deals.

    • Fertility Monitors: These are professional, expensive units, that run a full battery of tests to determine the ovulation stage in a woman’s cycle. They can test the electrolyte levels in saliva and cervical mucous, to find the most fertile days and which day is the ovulation stage. But they have the advantage that they can map out the fertility stage of the month up to 7 days in advance, and the exact ovulation day. They also allow uploading data to a computer, to be shared with professionals for analysis. Ovacue makes such a fertility monitor.

    • Digital Ovulation Kits: These detect the surge in Luteinizing Hormone (LH) for 24-36 hours before ovulation. (LH is secreted by the pituitary gland, and it triggers the formation of an ovarian egg.) When it reads positive, having relations within the next 48 hours maximize the chance of becoming pregnant that month. The Clearblue Easy Digital Ovulation Test works on this principle, with 7 disposable strips that you insert into the detector. The detector thus locates the two days of the month that are most likely for a woman to become pregnant.

    • Disposable Urine Test Strips: These detect the surge in Luteinizing Hormone (LH) in the urine, for 24-36 hours before ovulation. They are usually color-coded, where a line appears if the LH concentration is high enough. That indicates ovulation is about to occur.

    • Saliva Hormone Test: This is a qualitative measure of increased estrogen levels in a woman’s saliva just before ovulation.  When estrogen increases near the time of ovulation, dried saliva may form a fern-shaped pattern (although this doesn’t occur in all women, nor does it occur every month). In this test, the woman places a drop of saliva from under the tongue on a glass lens., and allows it to dry for 5 minutes. The dried saliva is then viewed through a 50x power magnifying glass. If a “fern” pattern has formed, that indicates that the woman is ovulating or about to ovulate. This has the advantage of being more sanitary and easier than examining urine samples--but the results are not as accurate.

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:

    • Size of the strips: Clinical Guard’s urine test strips are small, so that they are convenient to carry around with you. But they also have the drawback in that it’s a little difficult to actually perform the urine test.

    • Combination of Ovulation and Pregnancy Tests: Some companies sell ovulation test strips together with pregnancy test strips. Wondfo sells packages of 100 ovulation tests and 20 pregnancy tests. (The pregnancy test strips detect human chorionic gonadotrophin (= hCG), which rises upon conception.) A package like this ends up costing an average of 20 cents per strip.

    • Quick Results: After immersing the test strip in a urine sample, the [email protected] ovulation pregnancy test strips give results within 3-5 minutes.

    • Test a number of times: Ovulation testing kits have a number of urine test strips, so that you can map out the increase of LH and hCG over a number of days. (There are further increases of LH during pregnancy as well.)
